How this ranking was built

Discovery Matt Food Map rankings are curated using a mix of beef quality, preparation, cheese and topping balance, consistency, signature menu items, local reputation, historical significance, originality, and geographic spread. For this New York cheeseburger ranking, extra weight was given to restaurants where the burger is a defining menu item rather than a secondary offering. Brooklyn earned the top two positions because Emily and Red Hook Tavern serve two of the state’s most nationally respected modern burgers. Manhattan and Queens were also represented because of New York City’s deep burger history, while Rochester, Syracuse, Watkins Glen, Buffalo, and Endicott were included to recognize strong destinations throughout Upstate New York. Major national burger chains were excluded in favor of restaurants with distinct local identities and meaningful connections to their communities.
